Rhinoplasty In Grass Valley, CA
Your face is often the first impression you present to the world, and your nose is a central feature. If you feel that your nose does not suit your face, it can be very difficult to overcome. You may feel that it detracts from the rest of your appearance or affects your confidence. This can occur due to genetics, congenital defects, or even trauma. Rhinoplasty is a procedure that can help remedy both aesthetic and functional issues of the nose.
Unlike most plastic surgeons, Dr. Lattyak is double board-certified in Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat) and has had fellowship training in Facial Plastic Surgery.
This rigorous training and expertise is of critical importance when it comes to the nuances of rhinoplasty surgery and achieving the best results. Dr. Lattyak and our team at the Élan Clinic are committed to providing our rhinoplasty patients with comprehensive, personalized care. From consultation to recovery, we’re here to help you through the rhinoplasty process and to get the best possible outcome.
What Is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. It can reduce or increase the size of the nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, correct a crooked or asymmetrically shaped nose, or change the angle between the nose and the upper lip. It may also correct a congenital issue or injury or help relieve some breathing problems.
Learn More About Dr. LattyakWhat Are the Benefits of Rhinoplasty?
Changing the shape of the nose can have an immense impact on the appearance of the rest of the face, as a large or protruding nose can detract from your other features. Rhinoplasty can restore facial balance by resizing or reshaping the nose, which can help pull focus back to your other features, such as your eyes or mouth.
As such, rhinoplasty has the potential to drastically improve your overall facial appearance and increase your self-confidence. While each patient is different and will have unique goals and concerns for their rhinoplasty procedure, some expected benefits of rhinoplasty include:
- Improved aesthetics of the nasal bridge, nostrils, tip, or dorsum.
- Improved breathing
- Improved facial balance
- Increased confidence and self-esteem
Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?
Candidates for rhinoplasty are patients who dislike the appearance of their nose—for one reason or for multiple reasons. Rhinoplasty may also be performed in part to remedy reconstructive issues, such as congenital birth defects or breathing problems.
Age may also be a consideration: rhinoplasty is one of the few cosmetic procedures that is commonly performed on teenagers. However, Dr. Lattyak does not perform this procedure until the patient’s nose has fully developed, typically after 17 years of age. It’s important to consider teenagers’ social and emotional adjustment, too, and to make sure it’s what they, and not their parents, really want.
Candidates for rhinoplasty:
- Want to improve the aesthetics of their nose
- May need to fix a functional aspect of their nose
- Are adults or teenagers with fully developed noses and are well prepared for the implications of cosmetic surgery
- Are generally in good health
- Have realistic expectations for results
What Are My Rhinoplasty Options?
Closed Rhinoplasty
Dr. Lattyak may use this technique for patients with minor nasal concerns. The incisions are made on the inside of the nose (in the nostrils) so that Dr. Lattyak may manipulate the tissues, cartilage, bone, and skin.
Open Rhinoplasty
This method allows for the most revision, as Dr. Lattyak will have a better view of the internal structures of the nose. Incisions are placed outside the nose, but they are very small and should not result in obvious scarring.
Septoplasty
This may be performed alone or in conjunction with either an open or closed rhinoplasty. Septoplasty straightens the wall of bone and cartilage (septum) between the two nostrils, commonly fixing breathing issues related to a deviated septum.
Combining Your Rhinoplasty with Other Procedures
While the above methodology is dependent on your specific needs and anatomy, you may wish to choose another facial surgery to be performed along with your rhinoplasty. Combining procedures can cut down on recovery time as well as create a more cohesive result.
Chin Implant
If you have a weak chin, Dr. Lattyak may recommend this additional procedure to improve facial harmony and get the most out of your rhinoplasty.
Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
This procedure can restore a more youthful appearance to the eyes by removing sagging skin and pockets of fat. Blepharoplasty can also be beneficial to younger patients with a genetic predisposition to excess fat under the eyes.
Facelift or Mini Facelift
While many patients who undergo rhinoplasty are younger, this procedure has no age limit, and it is popular with patients who are also in the age range for facelifts. Combining these two procedures in one session can greatly reduce recovery time and create a transformative result.
How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?
Your Consultation
Rhinoplasty is one of the most complex cosmetic procedures, with the slightest alteration making a huge impact on the final outcome. As such, this procedure has the potential to drastically change the appearance of your face, which makes rhinoplasty a serious commitment. Your consultation is crucial in determining if this procedure is right for you and your goals, so be sure to make the most of it by coming prepared with questions, concerns, reference photos, and your medical history so that Dr. Lattyak can help you make an informed decision.
Dr. Lattyak will also be honest with you about expected results, recovery time, and risks so that you can be confident in your choice to proceed with the procedure. Once he creates a surgical plan for you, he will examine your nose and discuss the details of the procedure itself.
If you are interested in rhinoplasty or would like to see if you are a candidate for this procedure, call the Élan Clinic today at (530) 273-3400 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Lattyak.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia, and it usually takes an hour or two, though complicated cases may take longer. During surgery, the nose’s skin is separated from its supporting framework of bone and cartilage, which is then sculpted to the desired shape. The nature of the sculpting will depend on your goals for the procedure and Dr. Lattyak’s preferred technique. Finally, the skin is redraped over the new framework.
When the surgery is complete, a splint will be applied to help your nose maintain its new shape. Nasal packs or soft plastic splints may also be placed in your nostrils to stabilize the septum. You will be monitored as you wake up from the anesthesia, and your responsible driver will be able to take you home.
What Is Rhinoplasty Recovery Like?
After surgery—particularly during the first twenty-four hours—your face will feel puffy, your nose may ache, and you may have a dull headache. You can reduce the swelling by keeping your head elevated as much as possible during the first couple of weeks. Dr. Lattyak will prescribe you pain medication to help with any discomfort. A little bleeding is common during the first few days following surgery, and you may continue to feel some stuffiness for several weeks. Dr. Lattyak will probably ask you not to blow your nose for the first couple of weeks or so while the tissues heal.
You’ll notice that the swelling and bruising around your eyes will increase at first, reaching a peak after two or three days. Applying cold compresses will reduce this swelling and make you feel a bit better. In any case, you’ll feel a lot better than you look. Most of the swelling and bruising should disappear within two weeks or so. (Some subtle swelling—unnoticeable to anyone but you and Dr. Lattyak—will remain for several months).
If you have nasal packing, it will be removed after a few days, making you feel much more comfortable. By the end of one or, occasionally, two weeks, all dressings, splints, and stitches should be removed.
Dr. Lattyak will give you more specific guidelines for gradually resuming your normal activities. They’re likely to include these suggestions:
- For four to six weeks, avoid strenuous activity (e.g., jogging, swimming, bending, sexual relations, and other activities that increase blood pressure).
- For eight weeks, avoid hitting or rubbing your nose or getting it sunburned.
- Be gentle when washing your face and hair or using cosmetics.
You can wear contact lenses as soon as you feel like it, but glasses are another story. Once the splint is off, your glasses will have to be taped to your forehead or propped on your cheeks for another six to seven weeks until your nose is completely healed.
Dr. Lattyak will schedule frequent follow-up visits in the months after surgery to check on the progress of your healing. If you have any unusual symptoms between visits or any questions about what you can and can’t do, don’t hesitate to call our office.
When Will I See My Rhinoplasty Results?
In the days following surgery, when your face is bruised and swollen, it’s easy to forget that you will be looking better. In fact, many patients feel depressed for a while after plastic surgery—it’s quite normal and understandable. Rest assured that this stage will pass. Day by day, your nose will begin to look better, and your spirits will improve. Within a week or two, you’ll no longer look as if you’ve just had surgery.
Still, healing is a slow and gradual process that is both physical and emotional. Some subtle swelling may be present for months, especially in the tip. The final results of rhinoplasty may not be apparent for a year or more. In the meantime, you might experience some unexpected reactions from family and friends. They may say they don’t see a major difference in your nose, or they may act resentfully, especially if you’ve changed something they view as a family or ethnic trait. If that happens, try to keep in mind why you decided to have this surgery in the first place. If you’ve met your goals, then your surgery is a success.
Rhinoplasty has quite a long recovery process, but if you are undergoing the procedure to better yourself and your self-confidence, it is worth it. Many patients who undergo this procedure are ecstatic with their results, as they feel that they can finally walk through life with a boosted self-esteem.
