Breast Lift In Grass Valley, CA
Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman’s breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose shape and firmness and begin to sag.
If you’re considering a breast lift, this page will give you a basic understanding of the procedure–when it can help, how it’s performed, and what results you can expect. It can’t answer all your questions since a lot depends on your circumstances. Please be sure to ask Dr. Lattyak if there is anything about the procedure you don’t understand.
What Is a Breast Lift?
Breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts–at least, for a time. (No surgery can permanently delay the effects of gravity.) Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple.
Learn More About Dr. LattyakWhat Are the Benefits of a Breast Lift?
For women who are unhappy with their deflated, sagging, or downturned breasts, a breast lift might be the ideal procedure. The primary aim of a breast lift is to eliminate excess skin and tissue that has become stretched over time and then to reposition the remaining tissue for a firmer, more lifted, or perky appearance. A breast lift can:
- Reshape the breasts for a firmer, more youthful appearance
- Eliminate excess skin that causes drooping
- Realign the nipple-areolar complex to a more centered, youthful position on the breast
- Improve confidence and self-image
A breast lift can enhance your appearance and self-confidence, but it won’t necessarily change your looks to match your ideal or cause others to treat you differently. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with Dr. Lattyak.
Am I a Candidate for a Breast Lift?
The best candidates for mastopexy are healthy, emotionally-stable women who are realistic about what the surgery can accomplish. The best results are usually achieved in women with small, sagging breasts. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but the results may not last as long in heavy breasts.
Many women seek mastopexy because pregnancy and nursing have left them with stretched skin and less volume in their breasts. However, if you’re planning to have more children, it may be a good idea to postpone your breast lift. While there are no unique risks that affect future pregnancies (for example, mastopexy usually doesn’t interfere with breastfeeding), pregnancy is likely to stretch your breasts again and offset the results of the procedure.
Candidates for a breast lift:
- Have a primary goal of lifting and reshaping their drooping breasts
- Are experiencing breast ptosis, downturned nipples, or deflated breasts
- Are nonsmokers or are willing to quit before and after surgery
- Have realistic expectations for results
What Are My Breast Lift Options?
Dr. Lattyak will recommend the best incision for you based on your skin quality, your goals for the procedure, and the amount of necessary revision.
Periareolar Incision
The periareolar incision is made around the areola, which can result in less visible scarring. However, this incision type only allows for a small amount of breast correction, and the nipple-areola complex cannot be repositioned.
Lollipop Incision
This incision circles around the areola and continues vertically towards the bottom of the breast. Lollipop incisions allow for moderate revision, and the nipple-areolar complex can be repositioned.
Anchor (Inverted “T”) Incision
The anchor incision allows for the most significant amount of breast revision. The incision circles the areola before running vertically towards the breast crease, then horizontally across the inframammary fold (where the breast meets the ribcage). The nipple-areolar complex can be repositioned.
Combining Your Breast Lift with Other Procedures
Many breast lift candidates experience both breast sagging and a loss of volume. A breast lift only raises and repositions tissue; it does not add volume. Combining your breast lift with a breast augmentation can lift and restore lost volume in one procedure. If your breasts are small or have lost volume–for example, after pregnancy–breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both their firmness and their size.
Breast Lift
Breast augmentation alone does not improve breast ptosis (sagging), as the primary aim is to reshape and resize the breasts. However, many women experience changes to their breasts due to pregnancy or weight fluctuations, experiencing both a loss of volume and increased sagging. In this case, combining a breast lift with implants or a breast lift with augmentation enhances both the size and shape/perkiness of the breasts.
Tummy Tuck
Losing a significant amount of weight can leave the body without its youthful appearance, resulting in loose, excess skin and a loss of volume in the breasts. This makes combining a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) with breast augmentation a fantastic option for patients who have lost volume in their breasts and have excess skin from significant weight loss, pregnancy, or hormonal fluctuations.
How Is a Breast Lift Performed?
Your Consultation
In your initial consultation, it’s important to discuss your expectations frankly with Dr. Lattyak and to listen to his opinion. Every patient–and every physician, as well–has a different view of what is a desirable size and shape for breasts.
During your consultation, Dr. Lattyak will examine your breasts and measure them while you’re sitting or standing. He will discuss the variables that may affect the procedure–such as your age, the size and shape of your breasts, and the condition of your skin–and whether an implant is advisable. You should also discuss where the nipple and areola will be positioned; they’ll be moved higher during the procedure and should be approximately even with the crease beneath your breast.
Dr. Lattyak will describe the procedure in detail, explaining its risks and limitations and making sure you understand the scarring that will result.
Depending on your age and family history, Dr. Lattyak may require you to have a mammogram (breast x-ray) before surgery. You’ll also get specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking, and taking or avoiding specific vitamins and medications.
Don’t hesitate to ask Dr. Lattyak any questions you may have, especially those regarding your expectations and concerns about the results.
While you’re making preparations, arrange for someone to drive you home after your surgery and help you out for a few days if needed.

The Breast Lift Procedure
The breast lift procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Dr. Lattyak will make careful incisions in line with one of the three incision types chosen for your surgical plan.
The specifics of your procedure, including the length of the operation, will depend on the amount of necessary revision, the incision types, and if you have combined your breast lift with an augmentation or any other surgeries.
Once Dr. Lattyak has completed the procedure and carefully closed the incisions, you will be monitored as you wake up from anesthesia. After you are cleared, you will be given specific aftercare instructions and sent home with your driver.
What Is Breast Lift Recovery Like?
After surgery, you’ll wear an elastic bandage or a surgical bra over gauze dressings. Your breasts will be bruised, swollen, and uncomfortable for a day or two, but the pain shouldn’t be severe. Any discomfort you do feel can be relieved with medications prescribed by Dr. Lattyak.
Within a few days, the bandages or surgical bra will be replaced by a soft support bra. You’ll need to wear this bra around the clock for three to four weeks over a layer of gauze. The stitches will be removed after a week or two.
If your breast skin is very dry following surgery, you can apply a moisturizer several times daily. Be careful not to tug at your skin in the process, and keep the moisturizer away from the suture areas.
You can expect some loss of feeling in your nipples and breast skin caused by the swelling after surgery. This numbness usually fades as the swelling subsides over the next six weeks or so. In some patients, however, it may last a year or more, and occasionally it may be permanent.
Healing is a gradual process. Although you may be up and about in a day or two, don’t plan on returning to work for a week or more, depending on how you feel. Avoid lifting anything over your head for three to four weeks. Don’t hesitate to call Dr. Lattyak if you have any unusual symptoms.
Dr. Lattyak will give you detailed instructions for resuming your normal activities. You may be instructed to avoid sex for a week or more and to avoid strenuous sports for about a month. After that, you can resume these activities slowly. If you become pregnant, the operation should not affect your ability to breastfeed since your milk ducts and nipples will be left intact.
When Will I See My Breast Lift Results?
Dr. Lattyak will try to make your scars as inconspicuous as possible. Still, it’s important to remember that mastopexy scars are extensive and permanent. They often remain lumpy and red for months, gradually becoming less obvious, sometimes eventually fading to thin white lines. Fortunately, the scars can usually be placed so you can wear even low-cut tops.
You should also remember that a breast lift won’t keep you firm forever–the effects of gravity, pregnancy, aging, and weight fluctuations will eventually take their toll again. Women who have implants along with their breast lift may find the results last longer.
Your satisfaction with a breast lift is likely greater if you understand the procedure thoroughly and your expectations are realistic.
