We all want to feel confident about our bodies and private places. Enlarged labia minora can be a great source of discomfort–both physical and emotional–for many women and may be a result of genetics, pregnancy and childbirth, or hormone changes. In addition to physical discomfort during exercise, sexual intercourse, and daily activities, large or protruding labia minora can also be a source of embarrassment and insecurity, causing women to avoid intimacy or wearing certain clothes.

Dr. Lattyak and his team at the Élan Clinic understand how important this procedure is for women suffering from physical discomfort and a loss of self-esteem. We’re here to help you through your labiaplasty process so you can feel confident and satisfied with your body.

What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty or labia minora reduction is a cosmetic procedure designed to reduce the size and protrusion of enlarged labia minora or the inner vaginal lips. While labiaplasty does not tighten the internal structures of the vagina–it deals with external tissues only–it can greatly increase the patient’s confidence and personal fulfillment, improving sexual intimacy and aesthetic satisfaction.

What Are the Benefits of Labiaplasty?

For women with large, protruding, or hanging labia minora, labiaplasty offers relief from physical discomfort and emotional distress. This procedure has been extremely beneficial to women who feel embarrassed by their labia minora or who experience physical difficulties due to the size of their inner vaginal lips. Other labiaplasty benefits include:

  • Neater, more aesthetically pleasing labia minora
  • Improved comfort during physical activities like running, walking, and exercising
  • Improved physical and emotional comfort with sexual intimacy
  • Increased self-satisfaction and confidence

Am I a Candidate for Labiaplasty?

The best candidate for labiaplasty is a woman with enlarged labia minora who desires to reduce the size for aesthetic and functional reasons. If you experience frequent pain and discomfort or suffer from emotional distress and embarrassment because of large labia minora, labiaplasty might be right for you.

Candidates for labiaplasty:

  • Dislike the size, color, prominence, or asymmetric appearance of their inner vaginal lips
  • Experience discomfort when running, biking, or other exercise due to their large labia
  • Avoid sexual contact due to pain, pinching, or pulling during sex
  • Avoid sexual intimacy due to embarrassment about their labia
  • Are in generally good health
  • Have realistic expectations for results

What Are My Labiaplasty Options?

Central Wedge Labiaplasty

The wedge or “V” labiaplasty method involves removing a pie-shaped wedge of tissue from the labium, usually where it protrudes the most, and then carefully suturing the edges back together. The wedge method is generally preferred for patients with a larger amount of labial tissue to remove and those who desire the most natural appearance of the edges and color of the labium.

Trim Labiaplasty

The trim method involves trimming the outer edge of the labium and then suturing along the excised edges. Plastic surgeons have widely used this technique for labiaplasties, as it is a quick and reliable method. This may be ideal for patients who dislike their darker labium, as the labia may appear lighter in color along the excised edges once it is healed.

Combining Your Labiaplasty with Other Procedures

Labiaplasty is quite commonly combined with other body contouring procedures for women, as the recovery period is very manageable with very little pain or associated aftercare. Some common options include:

Your Consultation

Your labiaplasty consultation with Dr. Lattyak will be instrumental in determining your candidacy and surgical plan. While labiaplasty is not as painful or uncomfortable as it may seem, many patients are nervous about this procedure and its risks. Dr. Lattyak will walk you through what you can expect from the procedure itself, the different techniques he may use, the recovery period, as well as the risks and benefits of labiaplasty.

He may also check for medical conditions that may interfere with surgery; be sure to tell Dr. Lattyak if you smoke or use any nicotine products or take any medications or drugs that may affect clotting.

Be honest with Dr. Lattyak about your concerns or questions about the procedure–especially concerning your results. He will be equally honest with you to help you determine if labiaplasty is right for you.

If you are interested in labiaplasty and would like to see if this procedure is right for you, call the Élan Clinic today at (530) 273-3400 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Lattyak.

The Labiaplasty Procedure

Labiaplasty can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthetic with oral sedation. It is an outpatient procedure, so you will be able to return home the same day. Labiaplasty usually takes 1-2 hours to perform, depending on the technique used, but it can be even longer if you have combined procedures.

Using one of the above labiaplasty techniques, Dr. Lattyak will carefully remove excess labial tissue, being mindful of maintaining symmetry and a natural contour to the labia edges. Once he is satisfied with the results, he will carefully close the incisions with dissolvable sutures.

You will be monitored as you wake from anesthesia and then sent home with a responsible driver and specific recovery instructions from Dr. Lattyak.

What Is Labiaplasty Recovery Like?

Discomfort is generally minimal immediately after surgery, and any persistent pain can be mitigated by over-the-counter pain medications or those prescribed by Dr. Lattyak. You may have some protective gauze or padding placed in your underwear to protect your surgical site; Dr. Lattyak may recommend you keep a clean pad on for the first week of recovery. You may feel some numbness around your surgical site, but this typically subsides over several hours.

Each patient is different, but many women feel up to returning to work within a day or two following labiaplasty. As soon as you feel like it, be sure to do some light walking to keep your blood circulating and avoid clots. You may also find that using a donut pillow helps if you sit for long periods of time; cold compresses may also reduce swelling and help with some discomfort.

You should wear loose clothing, avoid thongs and tampons, and protect your surgical site for a few weeks after labiaplasty. Sex, swimming, baths, and intense physical activities should also be avoided for at least six weeks or until Dr. Lattyak OKs it.

Compared to other plastic surgery procedures, labiaplasty has one of the shortest and most comfortable recovery periods, but be sure to discuss any concerns with Dr. Lattyak throughout the process. For the most effective healing process, rest as much as possible, and above all, listen to all of Dr. Lattyak’s instructions.

When Will I See My Labiaplasty Results?

Most of the swelling should subside within the first six weeks of your labiaplasty recovery period. At this time, you should start to appreciate your long-term results, especially in regard to the size, length, and protrusion of the labia. The color of the tissue and scar appearance, however, may take several months or even up to one year to reach the final result, so patience is key.

Once your labia minora have healed, you can celebrate the freedom it allows you to confidently engage in activities you couldn’t before. Compared to other cosmetic procedures, labiaplasty has one of the highest satisfaction rates, as women feel empowered by their labia rather than hindered by them.

How Much Does Labiaplasty Cost in Grass Valley, CA?

Each labiaplasty is designed specifically for the patient’s goals and anatomy; the price depends on the technique used, the type of anesthesia, and whether you combine your labiaplasty with other procedures.

Once you have had a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Lattyak and he has created a unique surgical plan for you, he will be happy to provide you with an accurate labiaplasty cost estimate.
