Most patients who undergo breast enhancement surgery are pleased with their results, especially those who undergo breast augmentation. However, in some cases, patients find that their breast implants are not quite what they want, they need a change, or they are encountering medical complications as a result of their initial surgery. Dr. Lattyak and our team at the Élan Clinic are ready to help you revise or remove your breast implants to improve your physical comfort and aesthetic goals.

What Is Breast Implant Revision?

Breast implant revision is a surgical procedure performed on patients who have had a previous breast augmentation; in some cases, the patient wants to remove old implants and replace them, while in other cases, the implants are only removed (explantation).

Breast implant revision, or breast revision surgery, becomes necessary when the patient is unhappy with her breast implants or in response to medical complications after the primary augmentation. Breast implant revision is a very individualized procedure, and Dr. Lattyak adjusts the surgical plan according to individual patient needs.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Implant Revision?

Patients seeking breast implant revision are unsatisfied with their breast implants in some way: their implants are uneven, misshapen from capsular contracture, causing pain or other issues, or they wish to change their size or material.

Breast implant revision allows you to change your implants how you’d like, or you can elect to have them removed altogether. The goal of a breast implant revision is to provide benefits that are unique to the needs of the patient, ensuring that she is more comfortable physically and more satisfied with her appearance.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Implant Revision?

Ideal breast implant revision candidates are women who wish to change or remove their breast implants for any reason, whether medical or personal. Some of the more common reasons patients seek breast implant revision surgery include:

  • Capsular contracture, which occurs when scar tissue surrounding the breast implant tightens and squeezes the implant, resulting in misshapen and painful breasts.
  • Rupture or leak, which is easily diagnosed with saline implants but often requires imaging such as MRI to detect with silicone implants.
  • Aesthetic changes. Many women find that as a result of physical changes from pregnancy, nursing, menopause, aging, or simply a change in taste, they wish to exchange implants for larger or smaller ones.

Some patients may not know why they are unsatisfied with their implants, and that’s ok, too. A comprehensive consultation with Dr. Lattyak can help you determine what changes might help you feel and look better.

What Are My Breast Implant Revision Options?

Remove and Replace Breast Implants

Most breast revision patients choose to have their old implants removed and replaced with new, updated ones. This can be a switch from saline to silicone, or vice versa, or an increase or decrease in size. There are also some patients who find that they want to change the shape of their implants.

Dr. Lattyak will discuss with you in-depth what you can expect from the results so that your second breast augmentation will be a success and achieve the goals you desire.

Breast Implant Removal (Explantation)

Some patients decide that breast implants are no longer for them, and they wish to have them removed. In the case of ruptured silicone implants, this is typically performed along with a capsulectomy, which removes the scar tissue around the implants along with the implants themselves.

Combining Your Breast Implant Revision With Other Procedures

Breast implant revision can not only provide relief from physical discomfort caused by breast implant complications but also dramatically improve aesthetic appearance. Combining your breast implant revision with another procedure can be a fantastic way to create an even more cohesive end result. Some popular procedures include:

Your Consultation

During your initial consultation with Dr. Lattyak, he will listen to your concerns and help you determine the possible causes of the issues you’re experiencing. He will also discuss your goals for the procedure and work with you to determine the ideal approach to take.

Dr. Lattyak will also check for medical problems that might affect surgery or the healing process, including blood clotting problems or uncontrolled blood pressure. Be sure to tell Dr. Lattyak if you smoke or are taking any medications or supplements that cause bleeding or may otherwise affect surgery.

If you decide to have breast implant revision, Dr. Lattyak will create a surgical plan that is unique to your needs and goals, as well as discuss the possible risks and benefits of the procedure and what you can reasonably expect from the results.

Be sure to ask Dr. Lattyak any questions you may have, especially if you have concerns about your end results.

The Breast Implant Revision Procedure

The breast implant procedure varies greatly from patient to patient, as each patient will have different needs and goals. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and can take a few hours, especially if combined with another cosmetic surgery.

Depending on your surgical plan, Dr. Lattyak may be able to use the incisions from your previous breast augmentation to limit additional scarring. He will remove the old implants and the capsule (if needed) and perform any other necessary steps, such as repairing damaged tissues or muscles or tightening the skin and reshaping the tissues with a breast lift. Once he is satisfied with the results, all incisions will be neatly sutured; you will be bandaged and fitted with a specialized surgical support bra and monitored as you wake from anesthesia.

What Is Breast Implant Revision Recovery Like?

Recovery from breast implant revision is unique to the specifics of your surgical plan, the techniques used, and your natural healing process. For most patients, the post-op discomfort is quite tolerable and well-controlled with medication prescribed by Dr. Lattyak.

You’ll likely be sent home with a protective surgical bra, which will support your healing breasts and help reduce swelling. If you have drains placed, they will typically be removed within the first week. It’s important to rest as much as possible to aid in healing but to incorporate slow movement as soon as you’re up to it. Finding a balance is key, as plenty of rest and light walking are ideal for promoting healing.

Dr. Lattyak will provide you with specific recovery guidelines, so be sure to follow them. He may recommend some of the following suggestions:

  • Avoid strenuous activity, including sex and heavy housework, for at least two weeks (mild walking, of course, is encouraged).
  • Avoid steam baths and saunas for several months.
  • Above all, get plenty of rest and allow time for your body to heal.

It’s normal to feel fatigued and a little out of sorts for a while. You may be bruised, swollen, and uncomfortable for the first two weeks, but around week three, you should be feeling much better. Most patients take about one to two weeks off work, depending on the requirements of their jobs.

When Will I See My Breast Implant Revision Results?

You’ll notice an immediate change in your appearance after your breast implant revision: Your old implants will be removed, and you’ll have a more aesthetically pleasing appearance to your breasts, with new implants or without.

If you have replaced implants, your recovery should be similar to that of your primary augmentation—most patients claim their second augmentation is easier. In any case, as your swelling reduces, bruising begins to fade, and your new implants settle, your results will continue to improve over the course of the next few weeks. While changes in breast shape and size may be noticeable immediately, it may take up to a year for the scars to fade and look their best.

How Much Does Breast Implant Revision Cost in Grass Valley, CA?

Because a breast implant revision procedure is so nuanced, your surgical plan will determine the cost of a breast implant revision. The price depends on the techniques used, the cost of new implants, the length of the procedure, and whether you choose to have combined procedures or not.

Once Dr. Lattyak creates a custom surgical plan for you, he will be happy to provide you with an accurate cost estimate if needed.
